A 2000 Year Old Perspective To Save You
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast with your host and the future leader of The Republic Of Wales, Sveldfjer. Now this might be the only podcast in the world where you actually have to reduce the speed instead of increasing it. However, what I wanna get over to you is that the past is gone. The future doesn't exist. So if you wanna make the most of your life, you've gotta make the most of these moments every single day.
Speaker 1:And this podcast is gonna help you live a healthier, more fulfilled life, hopefully, giving you some wisdom to take away every single day. So I'm gonna shut up now so you can get on with listening to the next episode. Good morning. Today, I'm coming at you again, guys, with some stoicism. Because it's very important this time of year to understand what I'm about to tell you because without this, you're not fixing the root cause of things.
Speaker 1:So let me get into it. This is what Epictetus tells you now two thousand years ago. Are you ready? So before I get started, when you when I say impressions, what do mean by impressions is the initial reaction a sensory input it is automatic and outside your control. That's what it means by impressions.
Speaker 1:Okay, The first and most important duty of the philosopher is to test impressions, choosing between them and only deploying those that have passed the test. You know how with money, an area we believe our interest to be much at stake, we have developed the art of a saying and considerable ingenuity have gone into developing a way to test if coins are counterfeit, involving our senses of sight, smell, hearing, and touch. They will let the denarius which is the the coins drop and listen intently to its ring. And he is not satisfied to listen just once and after repeated listenings, he practices practically acquires musician's subtle ear. Ear as you say in the English world.
Speaker 1:Ear. It is a measure of the effort we are prepared to expend to guard against deception when accuracy is at the premium. But when it comes to our poor mind, however, we can't be bothered. We are satisfied accepting any and all impressions because here the loss we suffer is not obvious. Oh god that's so true so we make sure other things aren't fake to me.
Speaker 1:Is that a fake Chanel bag? Let me check it, let me check every single thread, let me look at the design, let me feel it, let me touch it, wouldn't it get ripped off here. Is that real Snellbug? I don't know. Let me phone someone else.
Speaker 1:Let me get advice on this. Let me post it online, get expert opinion. Let me look into it. Let me research this deeply to check the effort that goes in. And what FD is saying, the effort that goes into that doesn't even go into your mind.
Speaker 1:So this is an example I use. Someone looks over to you. Someone's looking over to you whilst you're talking to someone. Yeah? You see someone over the over the road, they're looking over to you.
Speaker 1:Maybe he's a bit closer. Maybe he's on the bench next, but you're looking over to you when you talk to your mat. And you start thinking, he's talking to me because he looked over at me. And that's the automatic reaction you get. Yeah?
Speaker 1:Your opinion immediately is, oh, he's a fuck. He's a prick. Oh, he's a prick. And the emotion is you get angry that someone could be talking about you. Oh, what are you talking about?
Speaker 1:What are you saying about me? What are chops in me, mate? And then you think, let's go. Let's scrap. Let's let's dance.
Speaker 1:Let's fight. Let's go. That all happens very fast. Yeah? But, actually, the first impression, it takes a few seconds to evaluate it.
Speaker 1:Do know, let me put this to the test. Let me see. Is he really looking over at me? Are people not allowed to look over at me when I'm out in public? Are they really talking about me, or are they more interested in their own lives than me?
Speaker 1:Why would they be talking about me? Who do I think that I'm so important that someone's always talking about me? Why should I care anyway if someone's talking about me? Why do I need know what they're saying? This doesn't lead me then to to have the opinion, oh, he's a prick.
Speaker 1:Because I've put that impression through a food test and realized the impression's bit silly. It's a bit stupid. It's probably not based on truth. And even if it is talking about me, does it really matter? Does it really matter?
Speaker 1:But the impression we get is automatic. The initial reaction is automatic. The opinion is up to you as long as you give yourself that gap, that time gap. Most people don't, so therefore they think that the the the initial react the initial impression or the opinion you get or the reaction you get leads to the event that happens when you start having to scrap. Okay.
Speaker 1:So they connected all the things, all one of same thing, but it's actually like four stages. Okay. So then you scrap him, throw a punch, you get angry, throw a punch. And this is what he say, goes, his fault I punched him because he was talking about me. Well, no, it's not his fault that you punched him.
Speaker 1:Right? It's your opinion on what he did that caused you to punch him. He was actually saying how sexy you were. Right? He's saying, look how sexy he is, but you just blew off the mic.
Speaker 1:Boom. Superman punched him. Less than a second, hit the floor. You didn't give yourself time to inspect the impressions, but when we compare it to the Chanel bag example, yeah, someone comes you're you're looking for a bag, someone goes, alright, the Chanel bag's in the box. I want £500.
Speaker 1:You're gonna go, let me see the box, mate. You think I'm gonna let you just I'm gonna give you £500 if you just give the box. Yeah. I promise. It's in a box.
Speaker 1:Slow down. No. No. I wanna see the box. Open a box.
Speaker 1:But is this really Chanel bag again? Let me check it. Let me let me ask someone, and he checks up. So much effort, but I think we should do that with our impressions. And I think impressions is quite a cool word.
Speaker 1:I think it's, like, the impression we get automatically about things. I think it's quite it's got different meanings, though, because they're translating it, aren't they? But, yeah, I think that's important. So it's it's so hard to grasp the it took me a while really to understand this concept fully. Like, when I started reading Stoicism and, like, reading verse, I was like, god.
Speaker 1:I'm I'm not it's not clicking for me so much. And then it starts clicking and then when it does click, makes you realise that if you can always be a person who's always getting used to the first set of automatic thoughts and reactions you get not being the ones you act on, you become a far calmer person. Like, because you start you never like you're never always ready for battle type of thing, you're never always on edge. And if you can be off if you can come away from a bit of a cool head, I think it helps with everything especially health and fitness, especially when he's eating and stuff. You know the first impression you get when you see the most sexy chocolate cake of all time, Oh I'm so hungry you need it.
Speaker 1:Wait now, wait now Scott man, let really think about this now, you've just seen the most glorious chocolate cake in the world, now all of a sudden you're hungry you made, you got a meal an hour ago, actually it was forty minutes ago you just ate massive meals out of protein over then. Now you think you're hungry. Okay. Maybe it's not. Maybe I'm not hungry.
Speaker 1:I'm just maybe it's a craving because I've seen something delicious and I want to do you always need to want to really? Is is this a good is this is this is this passing the test? Is it is it does it just because you see something really nice that you need to eat it immediately? Like, is that what you is that the way you wanna live? Well, no.
Speaker 1:It's not. It's not. It's not. Bad impression is not a good one, guys. I'm gonna I'm gonna discard it.
Speaker 1:It's beautiful. I like the cake. Maybe one day, but I'm not hungry. I'm not gonna lie to myself and accept that impression because it's not gonna do me good. So you decided, you know, you could be a bit playful about things.
Speaker 1:You can look at things a bit more playfully. And I think if we could do this and challenge them, we can actually start sometimes laughing at some of the things that we accept on the surface. Really laugh about it. We're always in the perception of a perception. You're in perception of someone's perception of you, your perception of them, and it's kind of like we're all based on these like first impressions, perceptions.
Speaker 1:It's fucking nightmare. It's not working. But guys, hopefully that was helpful. Let me read you. I made a poem here for the challenge.
Speaker 1:Okay. So I thought I'd write. I'm going pause this challenge, but instead of just saying faux challenge, I'm to write poem. I did a poem. This is about fifteen minutes mind.
Speaker 1:I won a poem competition in residence school, just so you know. Delan Thomas could be my ancestor, I don't know. But let me tell you this poem and see if you like it. Okay. Here it goes.
Speaker 1:As another Christmas looms, a turtle Let me start again. Let me start again. This deserves my utmost attention. Okay. As another can't speak.
Speaker 1:Okay. As another looms, a turtle challenge blooms. The Welsh language makes a show, but don't worry, it's to help you know. You'll do three workouts a week designed to strengthen you to peak. A weekly strength seminar live for you, enough golden information for you to chew.
Speaker 1:Stoicism is back again, but this time taught not by men. Over 100 pounds Casey lost with stoic exercises that she lost. Every Sunday, you'll chat with Ryan, mental health is your Orion. You'll get more than this, but this caption is really taking the piss. Watch the video and go to the site or you and I will be having a fight.
Speaker 1:It's £59, they won off. The cost of two deliveries, you'd usually scoff. I'll see you on the inside as your Welsh and sexy challenge guide. So guys, that's my poem. Should we write poem for you?
Speaker 1:Me know. Guys, I'm available for free really as a poet. I'm in my early stages. I'm a real beginner right now. I'm gonna really go back into my roots and do some more poems.
Speaker 1:If you wanted write one, let me know. I'll get to work guys. I could do them quite quick, mind? But I'm over rhyme, you know, the duet, the duet, lines. I don't like poems that don't rhyme.
Speaker 1:Just a reader I go. That doesn't make me smile. I need a rhyme. Rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, But anyway, what I want you to do today as your main task, guys, is to get prepared for the challenge coming up, prepare for the Christmas is to start thinking about the initial impressions you get, the initial first thoughts you get about stuff, the automatic things. And I want you to put them to the test like we would put the Chanel bag money to the test.
Speaker 1:Question them. Really question them. See, you're tricking me. Are you full of shit? And let me know what you come up with today and be playful about it.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Don't be all serious. Be playful about it. Let me know because I am interested. But, I'm off to write more poems.
Speaker 1:Okay? And I'll see you tomorrow. And that is it for today's episode. So hopefully, you took something away from it. If you didn't, here's what you need to take away.
Speaker 1:Stop wasting time on social media. Stop wasting time gossiping. You've only got a day to live. Today's the only day you ever have. So if there's anything to take away from this podcast, even if you can't understand the word I say, even if you didn't resonate with the wisdom I try to deliver, this is a reminder of you daily to live one day at a time.
Speaker 1:Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days, but if you can make the most of today, I'm telling you, you'll have a fulfilled life. So enjoy your day and hopefully I'll see you back tomorrow. Your daily to live one day at a time. Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days. But if you can make the most of today, I'm telling you, you'll have a fulfilled life.
Speaker 1:So enjoy your day and hopefully, I'll see you back tomorrow.
