"All Our Unhappiness Comes From Our Inability to Sit Alone in Our Room"
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. So hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.
Speaker 1:And remember, all it takes is one day at a time. And we are back with The Daily Podcast. I hope you all had a good bank holiday weekend and a time to yourself. Probably enjoyed a few drinks, first sniff of freedom. I actually went to this bar in London with a friend, Bar Elba, didn't realize.
Speaker 1:He's actually named after Napoleon. So, know, basically he was a Napoleon themed bar because Elba was the island he got he went to exile and guess it's in Waterloo. I was like, alright, okay, I get it. Waterloo's already lost. Elba's already in an exile.
Speaker 1:It's quite cool. But it's really weird, like you just sit there in loads of space between people and it was freezing because it has to be outside on a rooftop. And there was no atmosphere, it was just weird. I think it's pointless to be honest. Maybe pubs and stuff are better in a day but that's no way to go and spend money in London, it's just a waste of time.
Speaker 1:Anyway, hope you all had a better outcome than I. I did actually go glamping as well in Kidderminster, which is quite good. Really, really, really quiet. Had to do had to use wood to heat everything wood to fire to heat everything up. There was no hot water.
Speaker 1:Was really, really, old school. But it reminded me of his quote because I was there with a few friends and one of my friends Tim, Ryan also knows Ryan used to be really good friends with back in the day Tim if you're listening hello, he's very like can't sit still can't sit still so what are doing then? Well Tim we're in the middle of nowhere mate we got a fire, we've got a pizza oven which we
Speaker 2:need to heat up for
Speaker 1:a good hour to eat. We just got to be chill, we've got to sit in nature. Reminds me this quote and I think it's important for everybody to know, all of our unhappiness comes from our inability to sit alone in our room. Now this doesn't actually mean like you know sitting in your bedroom on the bed. It means being able to sit on your own with your own thoughts without being pulled left, right, and center.
Speaker 1:And if any of you watching the news on Twitter and all that stuff, all people talk about these is Bitcoin. Everyone talks about Bitcoin cryptocurrency. They're all trying to jump in and gamble and make loads of money. They are engulfed by Bitcoin and all that. They put they put a lot of money into it.
Speaker 1:They're hoping to make a lot of cash from the risk and it's literally engulfed their thoughts like their entire thought process is crypto and whoever I don't care, I really don't care about it and the reason I'm not even joining in this mess is because once you join in on stuff like the stock market, the and you're doing day trading, now you're doing crypto, your entire mind is just taken with it and all you gotta do, you can't sit alone in your room, you have to be online, you have to be out there with people, you have to be talking about it, you have to be minding, you have to be in other people's business. You have to know what other people are doing. You have to always be watching the stocks. You have to your mind is everywhere apart from in yourself. And honestly, that would just ruin everything I'm trying to build.
Speaker 1:And if you think about it, how much how many how many hours are people wasting in hope that this crypto stuff, which a lot of
Speaker 2:it is a is a is
Speaker 1:a Ponzi fraud scheme, right, is gonna turn out for them in in a good way, which it won't. This this is similar to what happened in the .com bubble in February but worse because I was at least legit companies crypto. There's loads of weird coins. And I was thinking, so even on this trip away, was thinking like it is actually quite difficult to be in your own in your own mind but if you can just like sit there in front of a fire in silence and just let your mind wonder and think about you know just catch up with your thoughts and maybe just catch up with what you've been doing since lockdown all this time you know, a chat with friends obviously of course, but it's actually really nice to just be able to have the ability to actually sit there on your own. I think it's one of the most important skills to have especially during as people listening in the twenties onwards when four more is probably the biggest destroyer of, happiness and creativity and momentum out there.
Speaker 1:Because if four more keeps taking over, fear of missing out, the fear of this, fear of that, and you literally can't stay still in your own mind, then you're getting pulled by external stuff every single day, every weeknight, every weekend. And what it tends to happen is you end up doing stuff you don't really wanna do. You spend a lot of money and you're just doing it because you just cannot sit you just cannot be on your own in your own mind. It's quite strange. Because, you know, the only person I can't remember who was speaking to.
Speaker 1:It was a sim similar thing. It was like, maybe it's on one of the Zoom calls. You know, do you wanna do something to make your friend happy for twenty minutes or something you regret or would you want to make yourself happy who you spend every hour of the day with? That's really the question you ask yourself and you've got to be able to say no, like hurting someone's feelings saying no, if they get hurt but you say no to a plan or no to something because you don't want to do it, that's on them, don't let them pull you all the time. You've got to be able to say no and you've to be able to stand on your ground and don't feel bad for it and get used to being in your own mind.
Speaker 1:And if you can master this, if you can practice it, this control of four more and only take you out. Basically this whole fitness journey becomes easier. Think of how many times four more has caused you to go out on a massive drinking session or eating out when you didn't really want to spend all our money, but you've eaten loads out anyway. There's a lot of stuff that we just tend to do just to scratch that itch and it's a really powerful itch. You know, these marketing, the marketing and stuff as well, businesses is phenomenal.
Speaker 1:So yeah, I think mastering formulas on the weekends coming up has to be something that we got to have in mind to control because if you can't, you're to lose out. And there's a balance obviously, like we say moderation and all that stuff we have to be able to enjoy ourselves out and live a life and you know post COVID we want to make the most and see friends we haven't seen in ages of course but don't let don't let the formal make you do something just kind of, know, what's the word, erratic maybe or something, you know, you didn't really wanna do, but you've done it just to just to tick that box. That's really all the observations I've got from the bank holiday weekend really is my ability to be able to sit in my own mind that think is something I've actually developed over time because I've been on my own, worked on my own since 2016. I remember wandering around San Francisco, I moved to San Francisco for like three or four months in 2018 and, for rugby warfare. And I remember just like every day waking up and walking around my home, listening to podcasts, listening to audiobooks, walking around San Francisco soaking in the atmosphere, working for coffee shops, speaking to people who are ever in the co working spaces.
Speaker 1:And you know, the first week or two, was like, what the actual fuck am I doing here on my own? Like, what am I doing? I know I'm living with few people, but what am I doing? You get a sense of panic because you're like, Oh my God, I need to be need to be where people are at home. I need to be out in London, need to be doing this.
Speaker 1:But actually after a week or two, you get used to it. And it's amazing how we adapt, isn't it? We do adapt as humans very, very easily to things. So, this is the same thing adapting to this new like being able to go out and stuff as well. You will after a week or two get pulled less by what's happening.
Speaker 1:You're going to adapt easier. So don't panic too much. But yeah, just really it's a practice thing. It's just being able to spend time and enjoy your own presence and that's the key to success. And if you wanna listen more about this stuff, I did find an awesome YouTube channel the other day, it's called the school of life.
Speaker 1:It's got 6,000,000 subscribers, but they've got a section there called Western philosophy and history and stuff like that. And they're all like six to eight minute long videos, even less about people and philosophy and really short and animated amazing videos. So if you wanna have like a a crash course and loads of the famous philosophers of all time and historians and events and just watch that channel, it's it's phenomenal. Let me know if you do watch it. But, yeah, what's your one big thing today?
Speaker 1:So Wednesday newbies turtle q and a tonight if you wanna join people who are joining that. One big thing macros, macros apps coming soon beta testing this month so please watch out for that but really guys and that clear whey is being launched tomorrow or Thursday so that's an easy way to get 20 grams of delicious protein like a squash in your system, like water basically, so that's awesome. And there's a new back to gym plan that I posted yesterday if you want to do a more structured six week gym plan, which I suggest if your goal is muscle building or strength. So yeah, there's a lot of things going on and clothing next month. So happy days everyone.
Speaker 1:It's good to be back on these voice notes. And, yeah, let me know what your one big thing is in the comments below, and I'll speak to you tomorrow. By the way, Cobra Kai season four is coming out this year. Unbelievable news. And that's it.
Speaker 1:Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host, Galf Lier. Hopefully, you understood something I said. I hope that some wisdom kind of distilled through into your mind. And I want you to now action it today. I don't want you to think about tomorrow.
Speaker 1:I don't want you to think about yesterday. I don't want you to think about leaving a review on this podcast. I don't want you to think about going to another website. What I want you to do is as soon as this podcast ends, you will take action and make the most of today. Ground yourself today.
