Budgeting Your Macros This Summer
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. Hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.
Speaker 1:Remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Good morning everyone, oh my god how much better is it with the sun out? Genuine, it is unbelievably different, the entire world feels like a much better place. So I hope you had a good weekend enjoying the sun, walking about, doing whatever you wanted to do as long as it was outside doing something, drinks in the sun. Unbelievable.
Speaker 1:Such simple things to make us happy, isn't it? On Friday, so me and Ryan or Ryan and I we were walking to the gym and as we were walking on one side of the street, Ryan spotted Steve Cook, which is this massive, he's an American fitness guy. He's been around for about a good twelve years now. He's one of my heroes in fitness. I've followed him since I was, so twelve years ago.
Speaker 1:So since I was literally like 17, 60, 17, this guy, I was following him, looking up to him, loved he's very integrity, trained hard, just sort of which is a really good person. I remember back in the day, did loads of YouTube videos on like how to be happy and and how to deal with relationships as well as fitness stuff. So massive inspiration, same for Ryan. He's like, Steve Fox. I said, go on, Ryan.
Speaker 1:You want to meet him? I've met him like five times in expos and stuff back in the day. Said, you wanna meet him? He said, Ryan's at him walking straight on and I like, Steve Cook. Called him over, he's so nice like just like, you know, just straight, he was with his fiancee, think he's in London.
Speaker 1:I just had a brief little chat with him. How was London going training and he's just such a nice guy and he's better, he's one of those people that's better in real life. You might think I fancy him at this rate. He's better in real life than he is and you see in social media, such a humble nice guy. Anyway, the reason I'm saying this story is because when we got to the gym I was like oh should have had a picture with him I was like why is this we why do we now feel like a bit sad that we didn't have a picture with him?
Speaker 1:Do you know I mean? It's like so Instagram, know, and like Instagram's really messed with heads up, why did we have to we we had we we didn't even plan to see him, but I've been to him, but we did, and it was a nice chat, give us a bit of motivation, hit the gym harder, you know, you don't need anything more than that. The only reason you do the photo and obviously you can say do the photo to store the memory, it's not you know, it's only a bump in the street like it's nothing, it's not even in some freaking event. But isn't it weird how we feel like we have to photo everything and put it online or it didn't happen or whatever? And you just have to I think a lot of us do this and I think we have to get over that.
Speaker 1:I think it cripples people. They can't even enjoy an event or a night out or a holiday without having a photo first and then they can settle down. I've had my photo now, now I can enjoy. But it needs a change. But yeah, nice guy.
Speaker 1:Steve, if you're listening, probably never gonna listen. You're a legend and, maybe hopefully I train with you. Who knows? Moving on. Because it's a Monday, I wanna talk about how to budget your macros because we need to go deep into this stuff going forward.
Speaker 1:We need the mindset of flexibility, all this stuff. So let's get into this. I'm gonna do an analogy of budgeting your macros budgeting your money. So bear with me. I've, we've tried I've tried to make it as simple as possible, but hopefully this helps.
Speaker 1:So if you know how much you can save, right, you know how many calories and macros you can have each day obviously. If you spend more than you have you're gonna go into debt, ain't you? Right, not good. If you eat more than what you need you will gain weight and you won't get desired results. Simple simple.
Speaker 1:Okay so if you're trying to save as much as possible you're also going to feel depressed and restricted you know these people that save everything you don't even have that morning coffee. Won't even go and get a morning coffee it's only a few quid you're not going to be a millionaire saving £3 a day or £2 a day. Have those little pleasures and if you eat as little as possible you're also gonna feel depressed and restricted okay so the two forms are similar. Keeping a reasonable budget shows you have financial responsibility it will help you in the future. Keeping your macros most days, keeping to your macros most days will show how dedicated you are on achieving your goals and how you take care of yourself.
Speaker 1:It's self respect, that's what you're doing, self care by you know budgeting your macros just as you budget your money. You can spend a lot on luxurious things such as jewelry, travel, shoes, a lot of expensive clothes, right, as long as it fits your budget. And you can have different food to satisfy your taste buds and make you happy as long as you hit your specific macros at the end of the day. Okay, so it's the same thing but obviously a massive cake is gonna take most of your budget up. You can still have it enjoy it, And it's the same with money, like you know if you want a really nice nice expensive, for example, like let's at the computers I think so I'll slip Steve Jobs into another voice note but you wanna get an iMac.
Speaker 1:Right? Say 1,200, but then you can get a PC as 500, and your budget is 1,400 for the month or whatever. You get the iMac. You're left with not much, but you're more satisfying. I've had that iMac now.
Speaker 1:It's good. I liked it. You have the lower one, the PC 500, you've got more to spend, right, that's fine, and you might be happy with that and you have more leeway but just because got more to spend doesn't mean you're gonna in a sense feel happier but sometimes we need those moments where we do go near our budget and enjoy the things we really want like an iMac, like a cake, like you know a meal out right. We're not really going to be fulfilled with the lower, the smaller thing like the 300 calorie salad when we go out for eat for food on a lunch in the sun or we decline that beer and drink because we don't want to go too close to our budget, you know, macros budget. But sometimes those things, they're actually they're not the pleasure you get from going cheaper, well not cheaper, going, you know, less with the macros sometimes isn't gonna give you more happiness.
Speaker 1:Does that make sense? So hopefully that's cleared up. So you need to think of your protein as your savings. Right? Stay with me.
Speaker 1:Your number one priority when you're budgeting is saving first. You wanna save with cash first. Remember to save first before you spend on things. With savings, you can make sure you have emergency funds and having savings will make you feel secure. Right?
Speaker 1:Think that same as protein. Right? Your proteins your savings it's essential since it's going to make sure you're not going to lose your muscle. You're eating your protein you are securing your muscle and you're probably going to be slowly adding muscle. This is going to help you keep strong, it's gonna help satiety levels and stuff like that's the base you need.
Speaker 1:This is the security you need to keep that like your, body composition, which is important. Think of carbs as your expenses. Expenses cannot be avoided, you know, rent, water, electricity, TV license, food. But since these are the basic needs of an individual, you know, needs you need to keep you on living. You have to keep on you have to spend these to live.
Speaker 1:And think of carbs as the same thing. It's the expenses. You need to spend your carbs, right? It's a primary source of energy for the body. And it would be best to have carbs to make sure your body is well prepared for your daily activity.
Speaker 1:Yeah? So carbs could play an important role in that but you don't want to spend too many carbs, because you don't want to just pointlessly go over the requirements obviously and if you do too much on expenses you can end up in debt. And then fats are your wants. So if we look at the wants are your small rewards after hard work on receiving your income, you'd be miserable in your life if you don't reward yourself on some days, helps you feel satisfied, it helps you feel like it's worth it, just like fats you also needed to balance your hormones and make sure you have a good mood for the day. You don't have to cut your fat since it's still required right and fats and carbs are in the foods we love the most think chocolate and unbelievable, Unbelievable.
Speaker 1:You need a balance right. So that's how you should look at it okay. So in a summary, if you know how much you can save, know how much calories, how many calories or macros you have. If you spend more than you have, you'll go into debt. If you eat more than what you need, you will not get your desired results.
Speaker 1:Okay? So just look at this as a game. It's a game again, and I've said this so many times and you're like, oh, you said this before. Yes. Yes.
Speaker 1:Yes. But when we think about now moving into the summer, and I don't know if the restrictions have gone off today or not, but because I'm not recording till Monday, wrong on a Sunday. We're gonna be we're gonna have a lot of opportunities to, expend, to spend a lot of our macros, to spend a lot of our cash as well. So, yeah, we just need to get in the mindset that we can't we cannot be rigid, guys. You can't be rigid in this process.
Speaker 1:If you're gonna be rigid, you are gonna rebel. And when you rebel, it's gonna it's not gonna be good. Right? So you can't be rigid when it comes to these things. And I hope you do start.
Speaker 1:The only way you can actually get ahead around this process is by doing it. Right? I've lost weight. So I've been, on macros alphabet. I've lost weight.
Speaker 1:And if I think back to the days I've had, I've had the euros, I've had eaten Lebanese food and a few pints. Like I've had, I've definitely, you know, eaten what I wanted to I've still done what I wanted to do. I've just like kind of budgeted better and I've managed to lose like 10 pounds. She gives that there's and I I I wouldn't have done anything differently. Do know mean?
Speaker 1:I wouldn't have I haven't had to sacrifice hardly anything apart from a few minutes on my phone. Like, I mean, it's not it's we just gotta get used to the budget and planning part. Some people are like, why? You shouldn't be this you know, I've seen some people on Instagram. There was someone on Instagram the other day saying, if you if you weigh yourself, you can have an eating disorder.
Speaker 1:Just like one thing jumps straight to the next. It's like that's just so black and white. Like that's definitely not true. And I think if you spend too much time on social media with people like that, they'll tell you black and white thinking and they'll tell you things that scare you. And you'll end up thinking things like oh my god if I think about what I should be eating that's bad isn't it, I shouldn't be doing this, I shouldn't be thinking about what I should be eating.
Speaker 1:We think about what we should be eating every day. You have to eat every day so you have to think about what you're eating. No, that's what we do, even if you weren't on the turtle you'd be like what should I eat today? And you will think about it and you go oh should I have it? Everybody still thinks should I eat this?
Speaker 1:Oh what should I eat? Oh that's bad though. Everybody does that. We're just going oh that's bad though but let me check my budget. Oh it fits in.
Speaker 1:That's the only thing we're doing extra on the app less than five minutes a day. But guys, enjoy your day. Okay? Enjoy your day one day at a time. What's your one big thing today?
Speaker 1:Right? The macros app is nearly there. The check-in's working. I'm it's exciting week, and Orange Theory to tip it off at the end the week. If you are going to Orange Theory on Saturday, see you there.
Speaker 1:But, yeah, I love Good Weather, guys. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy. And, I'll speak to you tomorrow. And that's it.
