Don't Get In Your Own Way
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. Hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.
Speaker 1:And remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Oh good morning, what an awesome book club we had last night, one of my favorite ones because we finished the book Be Water My Friend by Shannan Lee. Shannan Lee if you're listening you're on your guest appearance and our book club in two weeks is appreciated I can't wait for you to come on and speak to us so yeah just check your calendar and if it isn't there just put it back in okay thank you. But the book club right, so we spoke about a range of things because the book covers so many things but the first thing I touched upon was this and I want you all to read it, so Bruce Lee, he basically got a potentially career ending injury, back injury, couldn't move, he was bed bound for ages, he was at the peak of his career. And he took that as a chance not to sulk, not to cry about it, not to be like, why me I'm at the peak of my career?
Speaker 1:He took it as a chance to sit down and go, do you know what, I'm now going to write what my life, what I want to get out of my life. He read loads of books, right, loads. And he started writing ideas for films and stuff, which turned out to be Entered the Dragon. So these like real big kind of like failure moments molded him into who he was and who he would to become. Okay, so that's important to realize in your own life because all of us have these moments where we get injured and we're like, I was at my peak, just, it solves the law.
Speaker 1:It just always happens our way, you're at your best, you're at your peak and boom something happens okay. So Bruce Lee would always say walk on, he had a, so he says here, it was during this time that my father, the man of intention and symbol maker that he was grabbed one of his business cards and wrote in his big beautiful script on the back and with a big fat explanation point after it, walk on. He had a wooden stand made for the card and he put it on display before him so that he could see it every day from where he, woke up or whatever. So whenever he was down or frustrated he had a reminder to just keep going. Just keep doing your work one step at a time, one moment at a time even if you're not sure where it will ultimately lead.
Speaker 1:Okay, that's important so if you want to use symbols and sticky notes where you brush your teeth to tell you to keep going or Surya mentioned that she has just keep swimming you know Nemo just keep swimming. That's another one. Whatever tools you need because it's all about the tools you got. What ammunition have you got? What weapons have you got to defend and to take on life basically, you need to get as many weapons as you can because you need to pull out different ones for different times.
Speaker 1:And then Melania shared an incredible story, you know, I'm not going to share it here because obviously, you know, might stay in the book club and personal, but she's an incredible story coming over a lot of grief and stuff and she said before she returned to you know, alcohol and stuff and in the book it says about like, don't make things hard of yourself, don't engage in things you know will derail you, Okay, and she realised that before she had bad news that she did do that and then when she had bad news again years later, she had a different approach like well I'm not going to make things worse for myself like why would I do that now consciously? Like why would I self sabotage derail myself because I know it's gonna make me feel even worse. So I got off a different approach this time. And that is what you call self awareness. And that is the ultimate achievement.
Speaker 1:You have to be self aware because if you're not, you don't take a bird's eye view and be self aware of everything. You're just going to get like, you know, you're just going to react to life and it talks about Anna book. So this book talks about everything, okay, you got to read it. Talks about reacting and responding, the difference between reacting, I'll try and find it. And responding is like if you react, you're just kind of like going through life getting hit, slapped, you're reacting to everything, you're out of balance, you're not even thinking, your emotions are in charge, you're definitely not in charge, foods in charge, anger is in charge and basically you're down for a tough time okay.
Speaker 1:So it's important to know the difference between reacting and responding. So when you respond, you just take a step back, bird's eye view, breathe one day at a time. How do I wanna respond? And boom, you do it. Okay.
Speaker 1:Another one. So it talks in the book about the eight the the Buddhism, the eightfold path of Buddhism. It's eightfold path. Yeah. The eightfold path of Buddhism and one of them is like right livelihood which I mentioned just now, don't make don't engage in things you know will derail you, don't get in your own way, so Moolani was saying, it's key.
Speaker 1:And then right effort is underneath that, don't be in a rush to get there like there's somewhere to get to, like where are you going? You're not getting out of life, that's what they say, that's another cause, you're not getting out of life. Well like what do you run into? When people say you want to lose weight fast? Okay well has that ever worked for you in the long term?
Speaker 1:I don't think so. So why would you do it again? You're just literally going slower by trying to go faster it's that paradox. You must go slow. You must go with intent and you must do the changes full time.
Speaker 1:Do mean you're going slow, surely but changes are coming and you've got to do it with enthusiasm. So Shannan Lee mentions in the book enthusiasm is God, enthusiasm is the Godhead within us and instinctively becomes the art of the physical becoming. Enthusiastic to do, you know, training, enthusiastic with your macros, enthusiastic with your job, like bring the enthusiasm and don't be like, oh, life. Only get one life. Know it's a of cliche cheesy stuff, but you genuinely do and you will genuinely only get twenty four hours a day and it's gone.
Speaker 1:There's a new concept now going on around the Silicon Valley bros. They're not saying that they want to become billionaires with cash, are time billionaires. So if you're in your 20s or 30s, you've got billions of seconds left in your life or something ridiculous. I can't remember the term. Maybe there's maybe there's less, but they're talking about they want to become time billionaires not changing the mindset like what make the most of the time you got.
Speaker 1:So what are you doing with your twenty four hours a day? What's your one big thing? And be sure to do it and you know don't get in your own way. Thank you Melania for sharing your story don't get in your own way I think it's very important and keep going one task at a time, one moment at a time, One day at a time. And that's it.
Speaker 1:Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host, Scott Fleer. Hopefully, you understood something I said. I hope that some wisdom kind of distilled through into your mind, and I want you to now action it today. I don't want you to think about tomorrow. I don't want you to think about yesterday.
Speaker 1:I don't want you to think about leaving a review on podcast. I don't want you to think about going to another website. What I want you to do is as soon as this podcast ends, you will take action and make the most of today. Ground yourself today. Follow the one day at a time philosophy, and your life will change.
