"I Am A Runner"
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. Hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.
Speaker 1:Remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Good morning people, I hope you have had a good night's sleep, that's very important obviously. Now Mighty Networks yesterday was great because we had some great posts long form, sharp form and a good post by Justina, thank you for posting your experience with running. I think, if you haven't read it, read it. If you are not a member and you're listening well become a member and you might be able to read it.
Speaker 1:But, Josana talks about like the fact that she's now no longer someone who's trying to be a runner or thinking about a runner, she is a runner. This is such a critical thing to understand because if you keep thinking you're trying to become someone healthy, you're trying to be someone who can lose weight, you'll always revert back to who you think you truly are. Because if you don't truly believe you're healthy, when it comes to making decisions, you're gonna go back, well, I'll ask not me. I'm just like you'll revert back. Right?
Speaker 1:So you have to become and you have to embody the person you want to be, who you are. Like, if you can be healthy for the day and embody the healthy lifestyle, know, and whatever you think that is, whether it's tracking your macros, drinking your water, eating high quality foods, getting your steps in, saying no to shit, saying no to over drinking, having one drink and then being able to say no I don't want anymore. If you can do that for a day, you are a healthy person, all our life is made up of days isn't it? Made up of hours and twenty four hours whatever it is. So if I can train and become an athlete for the day, well I am an athlete that day, aren't I?
Speaker 1:So like it's not about, wow, how do I become something? You can do it today. So you become it today, and then you just have to continue to be doing it, and you're not going be able to do all the time. If you have got the mindset that I am someone healthy, then it's a mental model, it makes decision making easier. A healthy person do this?
Speaker 1:No, therefore I won't do it because I'm a healthy person. It's the same as a smoker thing, the study they showed and I mentioned it before. I can't smoke and I don't smoke. The person that said I can't obviously had a drastically worse, performance in trying to stop smoking because they were basically saying I do smoke but I can't right now. The reason I don't smoke was saying I just don't smoke, end of, there is no if so buts, I just don't smoke straight away answers done.
Speaker 1:Cognitive load is nothing, job done. So make sure you realize that you are someone healthy even if you've done it for a day, you are a healthy person and you do it again the next day, one day at a time, right? There's no magic number you have to do to be a healthy person for eighteen days, ninety one days, hundred and fifty days to be considered a healthy person. Obviously, you know, if you're not where you want to be weight wise, well yeah okay, maybe I'm not going be weight wise, but I can be healthy today and the body will adjust over time to what that inevitably will become. Okay.
Speaker 1:Another one, I'm no longer looking for quiet route, so I can hide from seasoned runners. Great. Running right, the problem with running is like it's so hard when you start off you're like literally dying when you start you're like you literally die in and then you can't breathe you feel like you look ugly and stupid you feel like everyone's looking at you you feel embarrassed about it and stuff like that so you know I get it in terms of running and it just takes time I promise after two to three weeks of running maybe three times a week, start being able to run a mile without dying and you start realizing you can do it, and then you start enjoying it more, same with anything. The good thing with running, can get your fitness back quite quick, but when you start off it can be it is painful. I'm not gonna not gonna lie about that, it is painful.
Speaker 1:So it's one of the best things you can do though, you can explore places. And then yeah, finally able to run and truly enjoy it, making the connection with my environment rather than just focus on my run. Awesome. Running is like a meditation, Max says, and same Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee said running to him was his meditation in the morning.
Speaker 1:One hour run, meditative state. Unbelievable. I mean, that is the holy grail really. Again, running, meditating, exploring your little village. You're from the town, the city, exploring the sun, in the morning.
Speaker 1:What a start of the day. Oh my god, think about it. I know them you're like, no, I'm never running, but trust me, those endorphins are powerful, very powerful. But yeah, that's a great post about it and yeah, definitely give it a read. And Justina, thank you for posting it and sharing your wisdom.
Speaker 1:I believe Celine had a post as well about maintenance, the maintenance motorway, I love it. The maintenance motorway, how you know you go hit the stretch with 60 miles per hour limit but you want to go faster then you gotta go down to a 50 miles per hour lane, gotta go slower, but you wanna go faster, you wanna lose weight, you wanna you wanna put weight down, like whatever it is, we're always going up and down, and it's, know, you still get into the destination at the end of the day, but, you know you're changing lanes all the time and stuff and actually the most enjoyable journey is to just kind of chill out and try and you know go slowly. There is a story I think I've mentioned it before about this guy who used to go on a 15 mile bike every morning, I think that's like a 45, so he went on a 15 mile bike, he's in the California area, and it would take him forty five minutes and he would be going mental like puff puff puff puff puff going really fast on his bike. And he'd go around this track, this is the amazing California Voucher Drive, his head was down.
Speaker 1:And at the end of the forty five minutes he'd look up, head red, couldn't breathe, felt hot, felt terrible, go back, and really like that's the start of his day. So then another time he thought, you know what, I'm just gonna enjoy the cycle today. Look, put my head up and I'm gonna look around the views. He did this cycle head up, slower, way less stressful, you know, his blood his face wasn't so red, his body wasn't so stressed, he enjoyed the views, he like felt more at peace, he felt more at ease, he felt more connected to the people, and he looked at the time and it and it it took him forty three minutes. So going all crazy and rushing and red in the face and stressed out and hating things only saved him two minutes of time.
Speaker 1:Right? And he realized, well, that's not worth it. Really not. Well, maybe you wanna go, you know, all out in some workouts and stuff like that. But if we slow down a bit, we're still gonna get to the same destination and sometimes faster, sometimes only just behind.
Speaker 1:But the process is so much nicer, isn't it? So much nicer. We're not going crazy and I think it's something we all need to understand. I get it. There's a rush now maybe, summer's come in, weather's coming out, you want to lose weight fast, you want to look your best, but the fastest way to get that is by and going the slowest route because it's going to be permanent, you're going to build momentum, you're going to start seeing the changes over time.
Speaker 1:Look you lose weight first and like around the organs, internal organs, that slushy fat that goes, you feel leaner but you don't necessarily look leaner. Then you start losing weight kind of like off your face, your shoulders, and then you start losing weight places and then after two or three weeks I feel really good. And you know what, I like it, my progress is good and you just keep that up. And eventually you're gonna look at yourself in the middle one day and you still won't be happy even though you lean that's what's gonna happen, right? It happens all the time actually like I know some people eventually go, you know I'm happy and I like please please be happy with how you look when it comes to Alekthan.
Speaker 1:You've done a lot of progress, but there is like a mind manipulation that happens when you do lose a lot of weight and you lean and people are like wow you look you know you look you look different. Somehow we we struggle to see it in the mirror And that's why it's important sometimes for someone you trust to say, have a look at my pictures before and after. Have a look at me now. Have I made progress? Let me know straight away because my goal is x and I wanna know where I'm after the goal.
Speaker 1:And that sometimes is a good option. I got a few friends like, you know, sometimes tell me straight, Scar me. You look in you look like you lost a bit of muscle. Like, what's going on? I'm like, well, coronavirus, mate.
Speaker 1:What do you think's been going on? You've going to the gyms, have I? Sometimes it backfires really. It's the obvious but yeah I hope this voice notes helped you. Look if results are coming slow for you don't panic.
Speaker 1:Like you can use the weekly check and as your time to vent as brain dump just say it all out. We'll read it, we'll come back with a rational plan, we'll make sure that we like what I like to do is I like to go through everyone's catastrophizing thoughts and basically be like, well, look, you haven't consumed 25,000 calories in two weeks unless you've been eating like a crazy person. A lot of it's water retention, And I try and bring it right down to more chill mode and hopefully settle you down. But it's okay to have those rants, and if you want to have those rants in the weekly check ins, get them out. And, we'll do our best to make sure whether we give back some feedback that's gonna help you, you know, kick start motivation to get going for that week.
Speaker 1:But, yeah, remember, slow and steady for Stina enjoy the process and, life is not that serious end of. Enjoy yourself. Okay. That's all. And that's it.
Speaker 1:Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host, Galf Lier. Hopefully, you understood something I said. I hope that some wisdom kind of distilled through into your mind, and I want you to now action it today. I don't want you to think about tomorrow. I don't want you to think about yesterday.
Speaker 1:I don't want you to think about leaving a review on this podcast. I don't want you to think about going to another website. What I want you to do is as soon as this podcast ends, you will take action and make the most of today. Ground yourself today. Follow the one day at a time philosophy, and your life will change.
