Kicking You Into Gear
Hello. Good morning. Hopefully, kick you in the ass today, get you moving, get you thinking, get you out of a rut. A lot of people are in a rut. A lot of people wanna do track, a of people wanna train, a lot of people wanna be active.
Speaker 1:There's just nothing happening. Non movement, and we need to kick up the ass. Okay. So I'm just gonna read today quotes by my favorite philosopher, Epictetus. See if any of them resonate and see if they can kick you up the ass and get you moving because sometimes we just need that.
Speaker 1:And then we need some of the shakers. Right? Because we can just slide in our feet through the day, day, day on, day on. No wonder we feel lethargic and tired. We're not putting any oomph into the day.
Speaker 1:So here's a few quotes for you. The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence call forth your best. I mean, obviously, you're spending time with people that are draining you, that's gonna be a big part of why you feel drained. There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or or our will. So if you think of the things in your control, it is so small that actually makes everything better.
Speaker 1:The only thing under my control is my voluntary actions. Remember that. Even if my voluntary action means I'm gonna do something, but it fails, the important part is my voluntary wanted to do something, and the end result, whatever it is, it is. But the the me doing the move, me going to the gym, but maybe not even having the best workout, I still went to the gym. Me starting on a business plan wherever, even though it's not done, I've started.
Speaker 1:Me starting a task, it's not finished, done a terribly, at least I turned up, right, did that. And that's what he's talking about there. And if you think about that, always under your control to do something. And, if you think about stuff that's outside your control, like the end result, people's opinions of you, if the weather's gonna be perfect, you're in there, la la la, then of course you're gonna you're not gonna be happy, are because you got no power over yourself. Friend, bethink you first what it is, what you would do, and then what your own nature is able to bear.
Speaker 1:He who laughs at himself never ends up the things to laugh at. To you, all you have seems small. To me, all I have seems great. Your desire is insatiable. Mine is satisfied.
Speaker 1:That's a good one, know. If you're always chasing more and more and more, no matter how much you got, you've got less than the person who is satisfied and being content with what they have. It still still doesn't mean you do wanna strive to achieve or strive for better, you're always chasing something, and the chase never stops. I think if you've realized that the chase never stops, you need to stop for a second and think what you're chasing. Is it worth the chase?
Speaker 1:When you just stun when you just walk after instead, maybe that works. It is impossible for someone to learn what they think they already know. No man is free who is not master of himself. Who is your master? Anyone who has control over things upon which you've set your heart over things which you seek to avoid.
Speaker 1:So whatever you desire or avoid, whoever controls after you is is your master. So you're a slave to your desires and your fears. And a lot of desires are memetic. They come from other people's desires. Oh, you've seen someone with abs on Instagram, you know what abs.
Speaker 1:You didn't desire that. You saw that in someone else and now you desire it. Basically, social media controls you. Right? And you what you want to avoid again is your fear and fear fear is learned.
Speaker 1:We know that from looking at the, you know, this Robert Sapolsky explains fear is learned. So whatever you've learned to fear, that is control of you. So where where is the master there? Your experiences, what you watch, what you listen to, you learn to be fear of something. The news can be one of those, the master of your fear.
Speaker 1:The news can make sure you start fearing, learning to fear something, and then you fear it, and then, you know, you the news is your master. You are not your body and hairstyle, but your capacity for choosing well. If your choices are beautiful, so too will you be. Circumstances don't make the man, they only reveal him to himself. And I this is bang on.
Speaker 1:I said this yesterday in the radio. You learn so much about yourself when you go through shit. When things don't go to plan, that's when you're revealed. You can see the best game. When you're feeling on fight, you're on you're on form, everything in your life is going smoothly, there's no problems.
Speaker 1:Right? You can say all the greatest things in the world, you have the best plan. Right? But when life comes up and boom, slaps you in the face, something doesn't go how you want it to, you are gonna be revealed. So you're either gonna be a solstice in that time you talk the game but not got a substance, or you really are deep down learning from the stoics, or you have looked up psychotherapy, CBT, and you actually are able to be present, not panic, not lose your head.
Speaker 1:Losing your head in the moment, the worst thing that can happen. If you're always losing your head when things don't when you don't like the things you hear, are you in control at all? No. Like I've had some news, it's not the best. And I realized it myself, I was like wow, like I didn't panic, I didn't my stress response didn't go off, I didn't fight against what I've been what I've been told, I didn't, you know, I didn't go, oh, you know, wish it was different.
Speaker 1:It was instant acceptance. What next? Pragmatic. What's what's the next thing? No panic, cool head.
Speaker 1:And then you just go and execute what you need to do. That's it. That's it. That's all there is to it. More you're wasting your time, I wish this wasn't the case.
Speaker 1:I wish I wasn't this. I wish I I wish I wasn't injured. I wish I wish I wish I and you're revealing yourself for who you are. Someone who cannot hold a cool head in the moment of need. We're not privy to the stories behind people's actions, so we should be patient with others and suspend judgment of them recognizing the limits of our understanding.
Speaker 1:Prosperity, is very easy to find a friend, but in adversity, it is the most difficult of all things. Deliberate much before saying or doing anything for you will not have the power of recalling what is said or done. Again, deliberate then. You can stay out of food. Deliberate before you eat.
Speaker 1:Once you've eaten it, I mean, spare up stupid. Obviously not the right thing to do, but you know, once you've eaten it, you've eaten it. It isn't the events themselves that disturb people, but only the judge ments about them. You've heard that before. To make the best of what is in our power and take the rest as it occurs.
Speaker 1:I love, I like. What you do today is your own voluntary action. You can track right now if you wanted to. There's nothing stopping you. You are listening to this podcast.
Speaker 1:You can pick your phone up and go and track your breakfast. Even if you don't track the rest of the day, doesn't matter. You've tracked your breakfast. You've done the action. Okay.
Speaker 1:You've started doing something. You started moving. And you might track perfectly for three, four weeks, and you go, Scott, I'm not seeing many results. I'm not seeing the results happening. Right?
Speaker 1:And we take that as it occurs, like everything is saying that. We would do our best, and then the results, we take them as they come. Okay. Four weeks is not the results I wanted like speed wise, but why am I chasing speedy results? Where is that thought coming from?
Speaker 1:Can I follow that thought to see where the hell is the right? Why is it why is it risen? And more often now is this diet culture ingrained into our brain, especially like Weight Watchers, Slimming World, all the diets in the past lose 10 pounds, 30 pounds, 40 pounds in fucking ten days, all the stupid stuff. You'll notice that it's those beliefs we have, but what successful fat loss is are still there, and they're creeping in. Right?
Speaker 1:But we take this journey as it comes, and you might have the best six weeks tracking and training, and then you get injured. And a lot of people at Turtleland have been injured at their peak. Training well, macro's going well, get injured. Alright? And we have to take that as it comes as well because life is gonna slap all of us.
Speaker 1:That it just it just happens. It's gonna happen. And no matter if you think it's going swimmingly well right now, I don't wanna be someone that brings the tone down. Like, it's just true, ain't it? It's just true.
Speaker 1:So we do our sinner power, which is our voluntary actions, and we go ahead, and the rest of the stuff will fall into place over time. But we can't decide when things will work out. This doesn't work like that. You can't decide the exact day you will get a new job or a new or promotion or more money or find the love of your life or all this stuff. You can't control any of that.
Speaker 1:But what you can do as a human being and to view you to flourish as a human being is to do your best every day, is to deploy the rational thinking day to day, is to be able to be a human, not be a slave to your emotions which are controlled by people who cause you fear or make you desire something, because otherwise you're just an animal. And I petite you say that as a say in a bar as well. So that's really it guys, you know, you've got the power to do things. You've got the power to take the actions you wanna take. There's no one blocking you but yourself.
Speaker 1:This invisible barrier. You're in a jail, and Laurie Gottlieb said this in the book, maybe you should talk to someone. She says, everyone's in a jail cell, so they got these massive jail bars in front of them, but what they don't realize is to their left and to their right, there is no bars. They can just walk around there. Right?
Speaker 1:But they don't they don't want to. They see the bars and they don't wanna look left and right to say, actually, it's my responsibility. I have got the ability to do it. I can walk around this problem. I don't actually have to lock myself in.
Speaker 1:But all of us do it. We we know what the next move is, we don't do it. You're stuck in this jail that we've created ourselves. So get out of it and start moving today. That's it.
Speaker 1:Be epic taters today. It's under your control. Enjoy your day. Voluntary actions. You got it.
Speaker 1:You do it. And trust me, your day will flip on its head, then you start building momentum again. So have a good day. Speak to you tomorrow.
