One Action At A Time

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the one day at a time podcast with your host and the future leader of The Republic Of Wales, Sveldfjer. Now this might be the only podcast in the world where you actually have to reduce the speed instead of increasing it. However, what I wanna get over to you is that the past is gone. The future doesn't exist. So if you wanna make the most of your life, you've gotta make the most of these moments every single day.

Speaker 1:

And this podcast is gonna help you live a healthier, more fulfilled life, hopefully, giving you some wisdom to take away every single day. So I'm gonna shut up now so you can get on with listening to the next episode. Hello, hello, good morning, good morning. We're back with another episode of one day at a time. Is Wednesday ready?

Speaker 1:

Isn't I mental? I think we back snowed in no time now guys. We'll be straight back now to the peakest time. No messing about. But here's what I want talk to you about today.

Speaker 1:

So I was rereading the Meditations by Marcus Aurelius K and I'll go on them all time, bear with me. There's loads of versions of the Meditations which is just his personal diary of him reminding himself how to live. There's so many translations that are like so complex. I think I was speaking to Sree about this, she was saying about the Bhagavita, the, one of the other ancient books. Like, when these people translate these books, they literally don't make sense.

Speaker 1:

The the English they use is, like, so weird and, like, difficult to understand. No wonder people get turned off all of philosophy stuff. If you read it, like, that literally doesn't even say anything. Literally, it's nothing. So this edition's kind of like a mishmash.

Speaker 1:

Some things I'm like, mate, give a rest. Can't even you know, that makes no sense. There's there's no way you understand what that says. There's some bits that are like, yeah. Okay.

Speaker 1:

That's good because it is a bit more detailed. So the really basic, like, translations, obviously, they type they kind of miss out on a lot of detail, I think. But this one is quite good. There's some good ones. So here's one I came across.

Speaker 1:

I I never came across this before. Here's what he says in the meditations. He wrote this down to himself, by the way, just to remind you. He wrote this down to remind himself. He was the most powerful man in the world, and he's trying to be a good guy, a philosopher.

Speaker 1:

He could have been a psycho. He could have done what he wanted. He could have had the luxuries of the world. He could have had anything he desired but he wanted to live this way. Anyway here we go.

Speaker 1:

Here's what he says, are you ready? I'm digging this up so much might not be as good if you know but also me. He says, you must plan he's writing this down himself. You must plan your life one action at a time and be content if each action acquires its own end as best it can. And that it should acquire its end, no one at all can prevent you.

Speaker 1:

But then he says, but what some external obstacles will be in the way of completing my action? None to prevent action with justice, which means doing the right thing for the common good. None to prevent action with temperance and balance and not in excess and none to prevent action and do it with reflection. So what he's saying there is, you know, even as an obstacle, an external obstacle can come in the way to stop your action you want to do, that it still doesn't prevent the fact that you're doing the right trying to do the action for the right reasons with balance, not in excess, and you're going to reflect on it. But then he does another one saying another remark back saying, but possibly some other activity will be hindered if I try and do my action.

Speaker 1:

And then he says still by meeting the actual obstacle with resignation and good temper, altering your course to what is granted you, a new action is at once substituted which will fit into the plan of which we are speaking. Now this is slightly you know worded in a weird way but what it's saying is even if you do an action and something comes in the way knocks you out of that path the next you just go with the next best action. She's saying you just do the next best action, that action you did want to do originally has now been substituted for the next best action right and you're still going to fit into your plan you're just not going in a straight line. I think we all got to remember this, you have a goal. Say your goal is you do you just you just wanna lose 10 pounds, that's your goal.

Speaker 1:

And then your plan is hit the Macro app, do the live workouts, okay, that's your plan. Your action is I'm going do this plan. I'm doing the right thing because I'm going be healthy and doing in a sustainable way. Okay, so I'm doing the right thing. I'm going to do it in moderation and temperance, again, not in excess and in balance, again, not extreme.

Speaker 1:

And I'm going to reflect on my actions every day. I'm going reflect on these actions and put my day up for review at the end of the day. What happens is two days down the line, Ryan comes out of nowhere. He's running. Okay.

Speaker 1:

He's running away from me because I'm gonna smash his head and he's just stolen something of me. So Ryan's running away. I'm after him. Nearly catch him. Boom.

Speaker 1:

He falls into you. Breaks your leg. Don't ask me why this happens, but he just does. Your leg's broken. So like, sorry.

Speaker 1:

Sorry. My god. We're good. We'll fix it. So you know you got a broken leg.

Speaker 1:

Can't move. You're out for six weeks minimum. Right? Not in your control. Royan's fault.

Speaker 1:

Royan's fault. Okay? The gods will deal with him. However, you're now out of action in six weeks. This can happen.

Speaker 1:

Right? You can have a really bad injury or and you're on. You're doing you're trying to do the right thing, but now you physically can't walk and get steps in. Physically can't go to the gym. Okay so now there's a new action that needs to be substituted in.

Speaker 1:

What's the next best action you can do in your new circumstance? Well you can still hit your macros and make sure your nutrition is even more on point, you can even learn more about yourself than you ever dreamed of because now you're sitting down, you can do more reading about nutrition, you can do more reading about philosophy and how to live and, you know, self help books, John Book Club. You can do more testing out different foods. You can get like, you know, look at the macros app. You can even spend more time getting into that.

Speaker 1:

So you can narrow your focus a bit more on the nutrition side and still lose weight because at the end of the day, even with a broken leg you can still lose weight. Now with a broken leg do you want to be in a deficit because you're injured? Maybe not, maybe you want to be in a slight deficit who knows but what the thing here is a kind of an extreme example with that is that there is always the best action you can possibly do at the time after something knocks you off another one. And I think it's good for us to remember this because, you know, I spoke to people on in a Snowden trip and they'd be like, know, what's the macros? How would you you wanna be did you track your macros?

Speaker 1:

And I was listen. No. No. I didn't. I don't need to.

Speaker 1:

I I I'm I you know, I know what I know, like, the foods that are that are good for me, but I I just didn't want to. And I think we don't we shouldn't have we shouldn't have to or we shouldn't want to track every single day of the year. I think tracking is a tool to use and sometimes put the tool down. Depends on the person though. Some of you, if you don't track, you're so wildly off that is it worth going that far off but instead of just spending five minutes a day I don't know.

Speaker 1:

But let's not be these people who think we have to be kind of like it's kind of this argument actually they speak about in stoicism is like the stoics were actually statesmen, emperors, they were in the city, were in the chaos and they wanted to learn how to live in the chaos whilst retaining their virtues. They wanted to be able to be good people in the chaos. Then on the other side of spectrum you got monks who will just go to the middle of nowhere and nobody can disturb them and they're at their own in their mind all the time, a lot easier than being, you know, spat in the face by some person on the street of Rome, getting slapped, you know, rank around no end, Rome again, boom, breaks your leg. Right? This doesn't happen if you're out of the way but we don't want to be these people out of the way, we don't want be living in isolation always you know thinking oh what about that, what about trying to be balanced macros, we want to be able to live in the chaos of this world and still make progress.

Speaker 1:

It might not be as fast or as straight as if you were at home all the time cooking every meal, that's fine but I don't think any of us here are here to kind of lose that part of our life to lose a few pounds. I think we have to learn to live in the chaos with all of it. So worry if some days you can't track and all that. If net net at the end of a a longer period of time, you've been tracking, you've had it under control for more days than not, and you've been sensible and you're trying to you didn't do moderation as much as you can. Like Celine says, moderation is sexy.

Speaker 1:

Know thyself as well. I say this boys and I beat this. I'm boys, know thyself. I can't go on a massive mega session till 6AM. I can't do it.

Speaker 1:

The next day I'm ruined. I can't do it. Back in the day maybe, but I can't do it now because the next day I'll be ruined. I don't want to ruin the days because that's the best part for me. I was saying there's a joke, was like, know, know thyself because it's one of the classic philosophical phrases.

Speaker 1:

But it's true though. Jermaine, it's true. You have to know yourself. You have to. And I think learning to balance in the chaos is essential.

Speaker 1:

So use the weekends as a chance to see how you can balance it. Can you have that takeaway and put it in your macros? Can you have a few drinks and make sure you don't have overboard? Right? Can you macro plan for the week?

Speaker 1:

Can you lower your macros in a week and and give yourself more on the weekend? Because even if you don't track on the weekend, you've still actually given yourself more of a buffer on the weekend. Like, can you do these things? Can you kind of intertwine these lives and these kind of ways of living? Because that's the best thing.

Speaker 1:

But also know yourself. If you're going out drinking all time and you're feeling shit, honestly, over the summer, you know, lockdown has been eased, obviously, in in The UK. You know, everyone's wanting to do stuff, going out, festivals, be thorough stuff. And I look back at these that period of time, and it's it's been chaos mentally, absolute chaos. Some ups and downs, ups and downs, really, really tiring.

Speaker 1:

It's really actually exhausting thinking back to how up and down it all was. Only now I'm starting to feel back on the straight and narrow and I way prefer feeling in control and, you know, on the right path. So like that type of lifestyle, which was a lifestyle for everybody, most people I knew throughout the entire year. And there's no wonder loads of people are suffering with mental health issues and kind of confusion and feeling like they weren't getting anywhere because living that lifestyle for me, know thyself personally, would put me into a complete storm that I wouldn't be able to handle over a long period of time. So that's the message.

Speaker 1:

I don't want you all to think that you have to do the macros every single day of the year, but please do be do do apply the moderation of sexy approach every day. And, I'll leave you this. I think it was I think who says it? Maybe Socrates says it. He says that there's actually funnily enough more joy to be had when we decline something like a pleasure like overeating.

Speaker 1:

There's more joy we get later on when we go, you know what, thank God I said no to that extra three or four Sambuka shots. The joy you get for not giving in to the temptation at the time is far superior to the joy you would have had at the time doing the shot or the extra thing you didn't really wanna do. Remember that on the back of your head because it's important. There's this joy there's a name for it, but there's this joy you do get. And I want you all to experience that joy more often than not as opposed to that momentary fake joy you get by doing something you don't really wanna do, and then you regret it.

Speaker 1:

Know thyself, guys. Know thyself. Anyway, back tomorrow. Enjoy your day, some day, middle of the week. Get that one big thing done, please, whatever it may be, take you step further to take you step closer to your goals, whatever your goal is.

Speaker 1:

If you want to get back reading, get reading today. If you want to get back on the macros, get on the macros app today. If you can get back training, put the time down today when you're going to train. What are you going to do? Okay.

Speaker 1:

You want to get back in your steps, podcast, listening, go walk now. Plan it in. Go do it now. Right now after this voice note's finished, plan something that's moving the needle towards where you wanna be in one of those elements, and, let's start building the momentum. Scott Aurelius Flea out.

Speaker 1:

And that is it for today's episode. So hopefully you took something away from it. If you didn't, here's what we need to take away. Stop wasting time on social media. Stop wasting time gossiping.

Speaker 1:

You've only got a day to live. Today's the only day you ever have. So if there's anything to take away from this podcast, even if you can't understand the word I say, even if you didn't resonate with the wisdom I try to deliver, this is a reminder of you daily to live one day at a time. Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days, but if you can make the most of today, I'm telling you, you'll have a fulfilled life. So enjoy your day and hopefully we'll see you back tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

Do daily to live one day at a time. Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days. But if you can make the most of today, I'm telling you, you'll have a fulfilled life. So enjoy your day and hopefully I'll see you back tomorrow.
