Pessimist or Optimist?
Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. Hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.
Speaker 1:And remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Hello. Hello. Hello. Good morning, everyone.
Speaker 1:I've just been on a eight hour binge watch with mister Blobby. Do remember him? What a character. What what troublemaker? Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1:On that note, the next book is called, I believe, someone about causing trouble or trouble making in a good way. The prima recommended in the book club last night. So do watch out for Alex. Very interesting book about, like, going against basically going against the status quo. And sometimes you are gonna be deemed a troublemaker or you're causing a stir when you're doing something you really wanna do because people don't like it when others around them are changing because it makes them feel uncomfortable.
Speaker 1:Remember that. So that goes to your family and friends as well. But on that point, I want to touch upon something. It's easier to be a pessimist than it is to be an optimist. And it's easy to be a pessimist to other people.
Speaker 1:So what I mean, like, is, like, worst case scenarios. So if I if I spoke to you now, was like, oh, do you know what? This coronavirus could get so out of hand that it turns into, like, who will I am? Like, I am legend and the entire earth's population were just like eating each other. And you could be like, yeah, mate.
Speaker 1:Wow. That could happen, mate. And you would you would accept it and you'd chat about it. Or I could say COVID could be the best thing that's ever happened to the human race, and you'd be like, no. Shut up, man.
Speaker 1:And it's gonna be it's gonna bring us new prosperity and green energy and stuff like that. And I'm saying I believe it, but a lot of people like anything optimistic like nah, they just cut it off and they don't want to hear about it. So we're kind of hardwired to to accept and chat about the pessimistic stuff whilst we a lot of people will shut out any optimistic chat. And that's definitely something British people do to a tee like anything optimistic is like, nah. So that's like, knowing that is important.
Speaker 1:And when you go back into groups and stuff, I think as well as like, do try and hang around and do try and spend your time with optimists. There's a good book called The Rational Optimist you should read if you want to go into it more, but it'll make you feel better. I mean, you need to you need to be self aware now when you go back into groups where if people are gonna make you feel worse or not because mental health is something that needs to be protected. And like Epictetus says, the famous stoics philosopher, you should guard your mind like you watch your feet walking on cobbles. When you're walking on cobbles barefoot, you're watching every step, aren't you?
Speaker 1:Because you wanna break your ankle. But how come when it comes to a guard in your mind, you let anyone in and out and you just let it go crazy and you're not defending it, don't have a guardian there. So I think it is important that when we do open up into the world and meet other people, we don't try and let people pull us down into these spirals of pessimism. Look, obviously, you've got to be rational about things, the risks and stuff, but I think it's important. Optimism is underrated.
Speaker 1:I think a lot of people think it's like, yeah, but you're just optimistic and you're not based in reality. No, you can be optimistic and be based in reality. Why do they have to be two different things? They don't. You can be optimistic and based on reality and you should choose optimism because those are the best people to be around.
Speaker 1:The best energy, they bring the best luck you when opportunities come you take the opportunities because you grasp them with two hands and you go for them even when you're not ready. And pessimists don't do that. I think that's another important point is like have any of you come across opportunities lately that you've declined because you have told yourself you're not ready and it needs to be the perfect time. I'll tell you, there's no perfect time to take any opportunity. And even if there is and you have the perfect time and you're ready, it doesn't mean that opportunity is gonna work out.
Speaker 1:So you might as well take the opportunities if they're worth it as they come and kind of what they say, learn on the job. You take opportunities, whatever it may be, and you just you just wing it. You just do your best, and that's what everybody does. That's what every single person on this planet does. Yes.
Speaker 1:You can be informed and good at your job, but when you do into a new role, into new territory, and there's, like, there's no some clear blueprints, like, you know, people are just doing what they can, doing their best, and it just works out because we're all it just it just does if you keep going and wanna learn and open minded. So that's an important thing to to take in from this voice note is, like, be optimistic this weekend. There's only two weeks left of this challenge, but that doesn't mean only two weeks I have only lost x or only two weeks I want to lose x amount of weight. Forget about the weight. Right?
Speaker 1:If you're on if you call this weight loss fat loss, let us look after the numbers. We'll tweak your macros this weekend if needed for the last two weeks, but we're not gonna be saying, let's go. No. Let's lose as much as possible. It's not about that.
Speaker 1:The challenge is called striking soul. Okay? Being alert, you defense, attack if you need to strike in, using your body as a weapon if needed, being more in tune with the body, the soul, doing the yoga, being again more in tune with the body, more in tune with the soul, bringing it all together and feeling better in your own skin as a human being versus, you know, we're like chatting to was it chatting to? Like, you know, men just wanna get big and muscle bound. And it's like, they can't even run.
Speaker 1:Some men like so big and muscular. They they can't even turn turn around properly. And it's like, we wanna be functional human beings. We're gonna be functioning good. And that's when we feel our best, when we're functioning as a human being, when we're able to walk and jump and run and skip and all sorts of things.
Speaker 1:You know? Ideally, we don't wanna be fighting, but get that one inch punch out. Boom. It's game over now because you've all learned it if you're doing the martial arts. But, yeah, it's a common thing.
Speaker 1:Like, from other challenges and just do being in this business now for years, it's like it seems to be the 60 50 to 60% through any challenge or any journey with a time limit. It seems to be the the valley of despair moment. So that's why I touched upon it last early in the week, and a lot of you would have gone through it. I myself went through the valley of despair, like, because, you know, it just happens. Right?
Speaker 1:You know, there's a long way to go. You're feeling a bit down, and you just gotta keep going. And, hopefully, a lot of you are coming out of the valley of despair now. The weather is hopefully getting better. It is freezing.
Speaker 1:And and my my energy bill is huge, guys. I got automatic heater going on. It costs, like, £300 £350. I'm getting rinsed. I'm getting rinsed.
Speaker 1:But what what was I saying to you now? I've lost it now because I'm so angry with my bill. But, actually, I gotta be stoic. Well, can I control it? Yes.
Speaker 1:I've got a smart meter. Look at the smart meter, Scott. Make sure you're turning your lights off. You're not you're not using the tumble dryer all the time. You're not being putting the heater on all the time.
Speaker 1:You feel a bit of cold. Close the windows. Close the bloody windows. But to be fair, on the heater's point, it's same as macro tracking. Once you start tracking your usage, you know, I know exactly how much energy my oven uses now.
Speaker 1:It's about 35p an hour. Tumble dryer is about 60p an hour. Kettle, that jumps right up. That's, like, 80p an hour. We gotta think it's heating.
Speaker 1:It uses a lot of energy to heat up, and you don't put the kettle on loads, dear. So you're not having that on for hours on end. Were shocking, so having lights on knocked it up a few pence an hour. Was like, gotta start to nose off. And yeah, you just got under the washing machine.
Speaker 1:So yeah, you do start learning same as macros, you start learning what macros are in some things and you start your behavior starts changing because of the awareness you get. So there's a lot of there's a lot of stuff you're learning now that you haven't been able to put into practice yet because the world isn't open. When the world opens, you're going to be so much more aware of the food choices and the calories and the macros and stuff. You will make better choices simply because you're self aware, right? More aware of these things.
Speaker 1:That's the important thing. I remember when we were doing one to one coaching, there was there was a few members actually who were, like, always on about traveling. But one member, we we do helping her with the macros and for, like, six weeks, I'd say, six to seven weeks. And then she went she was going to India, I think for like two weeks, I believe. And obviously, she can track India.
Speaker 1:We're like, look. What you've learned from the macros now is like Mr. Miyagi wax on wax off, you know, painting the fence. And he's like, am I learning the karate? Yes, you are.
Speaker 1:But you're not doing in the way you think you are. So we're we're Mr. Miyagi and you. Chill, it's gonna happen. And then she went to India, like, just eat in moderation and try and eat meals with protein.
Speaker 1:Be conscious, like, is it enough protein? That's all you got to do. And she did that and she came back from India, which she said she usually puts loads of weight on. She came back and she didn't gain any weight. She couldn't believe it.
Speaker 1:It's like, it's the magic of self awareness, the magic of awareness of the foods. And that's like something that you may hold on to for life after this challenge, which is great. But, yeah, let's go into this weekend optimistic. There's plenty of time left. I got a special voice note coming for you tomorrow.
Speaker 1:I thought I would record a catch up call I had with one of my good friends back home, and he's hilarious, but he's just, you know, normal normal normal guy doing, know, just get on with life. And, yeah, he's been updating me here and there about his mental health and stuff. And it's just interesting to see another chat and just see what words of wisdom come from someone, you know, just trying to get by. And I think it's important that we bring in more perspectives from people just living as opposed to, you know, like you see online, you know, like listen to this podcast with this, like, hundred million a year entrepreneur and this, like, chat show host who's also making hundreds of millions. It's like, yeah.
Speaker 1:Okay. Well, they're at the top end, and it's not really applicable to me. So, hopefully, the chat tomorrow, and it's about forty minutes, I'll post it in the morning. You're gonna walk with her or whatever. We'll bring some different kind of perspectives and ideas, but it is important.
Speaker 1:But on our note, enjoy the enjoy the martial arts tonight if you do it. I'll see you there. Yoga tomorrow and then boxing. If haven't done boxing yet, please do it. It is a massive stress relief.
Speaker 1:But look get out don't don't panic now don't try and don't try and like rinse every last bit of value from this challenge before it, finishes you have got access for life right? Chill out. You don't need to kill nuts, you got access for life. And don't try and rinse it like so I'll leave you on this, scenario. So this is the author, he's like a famous musician.
Speaker 1:He was like, I usually he says something like, you know, was cycling I cycle this 15 mile route, and it'll take me, like, you know, forty minutes. And, I decided one day, you know, sorry, he would he cycle it flat out, like, you know, balls to the wall, flat out, like 15 miles, it taken forty minutes or whatever it was. And he thought, you know what? This time I'm gonna cycle. I'm gonna go slower and take in the view because it's so nice.
Speaker 1:The view is beautiful. I've never seen the view really. I've only driven past it, and it's nice weather. So he thought he'd go slow. We'd take the view away, and he enjoyed it.
Speaker 1:And he thought, oh my god. I'm gonna be way slower. He finished it. He was only two minutes slower. He was like, I used to cycle balls to the wall red faced out, didn't see any view, got there at the end, hated it because I was so out.
Speaker 1:And by just going chill, more relaxed, enjoying the stride, enjoying the view being in his own thoughts enjoying his own thoughts thinking about stuff reminiscing whatever he wanted to do it was only two minutes slower but such a better experience and that's from saying at the end is challenge do not go into turbo mode cause you're gonna put your head down and you're not you're not gonna enjoy it. Enjoy the last two weeks. Open up, relax, take what you can in, talk to people, do what I said yesterday, one big thing, message someone that inspires you. Like do these things, Take the last two weeks. Chill.
Speaker 1:Enjoy it. You can you have lifetime access. We're not gonna just kick you out and bye bye. Total membership information will be posted in the last week, so don't worry about it. And, yeah, enjoy this weekend.
Speaker 1:As it's coming to the last few weekends, we'll spend together. But, guys, I'll leave you in that. I'll, speak to you tomorrow in the voice mail. Gonna be funny. And remember, ground yourself today now.
Speaker 1:Anything is possible. Anything. So ground yourself today. Think about what your one big thing is. Complete your one big thing.
Speaker 1:Put it on the back pocket. Job done. Happy days. This Friday. One big thing done.
Speaker 1:You know, maybe get your tasks done that's gonna make you Monday easier so you don't go to Monday stressed out and your weekend. You can settle just do the tasks get them done so you can enjoy your weekend without thinking of stuff you haven't done yet and I promise it's gonna be a good thing so get it done happy days See you tomorrow. And that's it. Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host, Scott Fleer. Hopefully, you understood something I said.
Speaker 1:I hope that some wisdom kind of distilled through into your mind, and I want you to now action it today. I don't want you to think about tomorrow. I don't want you to think about yesterday. I don't want you to think about leaving a review on this podcast. I don't want you to think about going to another website.
Speaker 1:What I want you to do is as soon as this podcast ends, you will take action and make the most of today. Ground yourself today. Follow the one day at a time philosophy and your life will change.
