Rebounding Quicker Is The Goal

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the one day at a time podcast with your host and the future leader of The Republic Of Wales, Sveldfjer. Now this might be the only podcast in the world where you actually have to reduce the speed instead of increasing it. However, what I wanna get over to you is that the past is gone. The future doesn't exist. So if you wanna make the most of your life, you've gotta make the most of these moments every single day.

Speaker 1:

And this podcast is gonna help you live a healthier, more fulfilled life, hopefully, giving you some wisdom to take away every single day. So I'm gonna shut up now so you can get on with listening to the next episode. Good morning, everybody. This is past Scott speaking to you because, you know, the present day Scott or the future Scott is currently thinking he's probably a bit of a Spaniard drinking sangria and Ibiza, bit of a loser really, but let's not talk about him. Let's start with someone who's gonna help us today.

Speaker 1:

So you can't compare to people on holiday. We got our day to focus on, right? And I think actually good point to be fair. Like before lockdown, you'd always see influences on holiday and stuff and you'd make you feel like shit because you think, Oh, what am I doing with my life? I think that type of mindset is crippling, is always crippling.

Speaker 1:

Back in the day, if you think about it, the working class or the poor people who all of us essentially would have been back in the day before hundreds of years ago, you never really would have seen the the rich in Nice in the South Of France in the seventeen hundreds because there was no TV, radio, pictures to look and go, oh, look at them in Nice. It looks amazing. You just you never saw it. You just wouldn't be able to see it. You could only hear about it in some discussions, but now it's in your face all the time.

Speaker 1:

So I think if you do feel bad about comparing yourself about people's other bodies and holidays, remember, it's not a very natural thing for us to happen. We can compare ourselves to everybody across the world and we can be, Oh, I wish I was there, I I was here, I I was there. And they really messes your head up. So that's just a bit of a tip is to go, do you know what? Wanna be someone from the 1700s and I don't wanna know.

Speaker 1:

Out of sight, out of mind. And let me tell you, this worked with me this day. I had leftover birthday cake, yeah? Huge cake, massive. It was about half a cake left and a few dabs in it.

Speaker 1:

Ba bam, I was like, if this stays around, okay, and I know the averages over time the matter, no matter if I have bits and bobs here and I gotta eat in the next few days anyway, that's a lot of calories I can consume. I've had a piece that's nice. I've had it was lush. And then I managed to just message people doing some shed throughout, got it down to like one tenth left. And I was like, God, it's gotta go because I've had enough of this.

Speaker 1:

I probably have had thousands of calories from this cake. And as soon as he was out of my because he was in the kitchen every time I walked in, as soon as he was out of sight, out of mind, I think it's a very simple rule. If you're struggling with stuff, out of sight of the mind. Very, very simple. But I wanna talk about a problem.

Speaker 1:

I wanna talk about how to deal with problems today. So this is real stuff that happens. Talked about this and that before. Happened to me recently is like a chat with an accountant, my accountant about some taxes and stuff and some miscalculations and mistakes or whatever you wanna call it. Not really mistakes, just like, you know, it's hard sometimes to have full insight into the taxes and what you're gonna owe.

Speaker 1:

I wanna hit you with you're gonna owe this amount and it's way more than you thought. And this is the same for bills or whatever. You have an energy bill, whatever. And they hit you with a bill, it's gonna be way higher than you thought. It hits you for six, makes you feel terrible.

Speaker 1:

You think, oh my god, what I gonna do? And I got this and that. I got money left and it's gonna be there. And I planned this, but no, I can't do that. And you have all of these things come together and you think it's crumbling.

Speaker 1:

But what's important is to do this. And this will help me. First of all, write the thing down, spreadsheet paper, write down exactly what's happened. This isn't it, right. Write down the worst case scenario.

Speaker 1:

The worst case scenario is this, I gotta do this. Now accept the worst case scenario, just sit with it, go, I'm gonna accept it. That's the worst case scenario, accept it. Sit there, accept it for a bit and go, how can I improve on the worst case scenario And formulate a step by step plan is such a simple thing to do guys but it makes your stress levels drop by doing it? Example, health and fitness.

Speaker 1:

I got so much weight to lose. What's the worst case scenario? Okay I try this and I don't lose any more weight. What's the best case scenario? Well, what's what how can I do to improve that?

Speaker 1:

Well, if I'm consistent if I'm consistent with a plan and it's led by experts, then I should make some results, shouldn't I? Make some results. Progress equals happiness. I'll feel better. I'll feel better.

Speaker 1:

I'll be happy with some results day to day because I'm feeling better day to day because I'm making slight some progress. And you go with the fact that, yeah, you might try the macro apple, you you might try the giant turtle. It doesn't quite work straight away. But what's the worst case that can happen? Try in a slower approach.

Speaker 1:

The worst case that can happen, it doesn't work for you and it's very unlikely that it won't. That is very unlikely they won't work. It will definitely work. But you have to accept the worst case scenarios that you've just tried and wasted a bit of time, you can then say, like, what can I do to improve it? And this can go for anything, finances, health and fitness, relationships, whatever.

Speaker 1:

And it's a simple way to deal with worries and stuff like that. And there's another few techniques. There's the worry postponement technique I've used a lot lately. It's like you go to sleep and you're like, I'm thinking of this problem. And you're like, I can't get off my head.

Speaker 1:

I need to get this problem done. Go, I'm gonna worry and deal with this tomorrow at 10AM on that seat in the living room. And then it just works And you just go, right, okay. Then next day comes, guess that time, like, right, don't need to worry, worry. Okay, let's get it done.

Speaker 1:

And you get it going. And like I said, my birthday was last weekend and I felt like shit after that because I was drinking. I didn't really get into my real groove. Like I did obviously work Monday, Tuesday, but I didn't get into my groove groove until late Tuesday, Wednesday. And I felt so much better when I was literally hammering out tasks, progress, boom, boom, boom, boom.

Speaker 1:

Time was like early, woke up early, got loads of stuff done by twelve and I was like, wow, this is it. Progress equals happiness. Yes, I'm feeling on top of things. And all it is just a few tasks, simple stuff. And I felt on top of things guys, That's what it's all about.

Speaker 1:

Progress equals happiness. What progress can you do no matter how small today, which is gonna ignite a bit of happiness and bit of joy. So that's what the one big thing is about. You can have a one big thing for the morning if you want, one big thing for the afternoon and one big thing for the evening. And you have three big things.

Speaker 1:

The small tasks you need to do, like I've said before, if you've listened to this podcast for a while, there's that famous admiral that had the story about how he did his bed every morning, that's how he changed his life. The small things in the morning, bed done, task done, boom, brush your teeth, another task done. See these as tasks, bed, brush teeth, clothes, clean up the dishes forever, clean up a bit, get my desk ready, go for a walk, get my latte, walk back, track my macros and then start working. You're like, wow, I've done about seven tasks ready. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

Speaker 1:

And you feel on top and you feel boom, you feel fired up. So today, if you're feeling out of it, you're feeling demotivated, you're not on track, you haven't built momentum, small progress today, please. Count them, walk, go for a walk. If you're listening to the voice and not gonna walk, stop it and go for a walk and listen to it. Go for a walk when you take phone calls.

Speaker 1:

Go on and enjoy the walk. Just track your macros today. Just get on the app. Just get on it now. Get on the app.

Speaker 1:

What are you gonna eat while you're having breakfast, we're in. Stop messing about. Just do it. Where else you go on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and this and that, go on do it, right, just do it. Like he's famous saying that I didn't really get until recently but I love it, just do it.

Speaker 1:

There's nothing else to it but to do it. I don't know what more to say about that but if you're not gonna work out today fine except that you're not gonna work out today there's seven days in a week, work out three days a week with weights ideally. If you're not gonna work out today have you not worked out all week? If the answer is no maybe you should go, do know what, I'll do it today so it'll make me feel better. But if you have worked out all week and today is a busy day or whatever, just say I won't work out today, I'll go for a walk instead.

Speaker 1:

And I've done that so many times guys, like I've gone, do know what, I'm not feeling like workout today, I'm gonna go for a cycle, I'm gonna go for a walk and listen to a podcast. Just feel amazing after that. You don't have to do the workout, you can do something a bit easier, you can step down a bit. Track your macros today, I can't do them and I can't be in a deficit today. Track your macros into maintenance, tracking macros but go over, just track.

Speaker 1:

I wanna work out today, I can't feel like, okay can you just walk instead, let's go down level. I wanna start on this work project today. I can't get my head around the right. What's the few tasks you gotta do anyway to get it up and running? Get those little things done.

Speaker 1:

Let's go. I need some of my finances out and my tax returns and all that. Okay. What you need is less work than the entire thing that you just need to get done. Just send a few emails off, save your PDFs, invoices, you sync to zero, whatever you gotta do.

Speaker 1:

Just do the bit the the level down and just get some progress going for the weekend. Weekend, keep it going. Keep the habits going. Make sure you're going for the walks, make sure you're still trying to eat healthy foods and not junk foods. Do eat them in moderation, but don't go overboard and make yourself feel worse.

Speaker 1:

Because when we feel worse, it tends to go down and we've just built up momentum again today. So today's momentum building Friday because usually what happens on a Friday's momentum goes down. But let's start ramping her up today, going into the weekend on a high, and you'll have a better weekend, no doubt. And look, if you do drink loads, eat loads of shit, whatever, I guess it's Sunday. Okay?

Speaker 1:

Forget about it. Put it in the app the morning after. Go back Saturday. Quick add 2,500 calories. Bugger out.

Speaker 1:

That's I probably had more. Put that in. Forget about it. Sunday comes. Know?

Speaker 1:

If you wanna eat the maintenance, it's fine, but try and eat fruits and stuff. Drink lots of water. Go for a walk. Try and get your head in a better space. Monday comes.

Speaker 1:

It's a new day. Do your best that day. Back on it. So even if we do go off track, we can still make sure that going off track doesn't mean going off track for weeks. I think I can't remember what I came up with this quote.

Speaker 1:

Who came up with it? I can't remember. I think it's a stoic thing as well. It's like in life, it's not about not failing or going off track or like eating all junk, whatever. It's not about not doing those things.

Speaker 1:

It's about how much time it takes us to regather ourselves and go again. So like as a writer, the example was a writer might write and hit the roadblock and it'll take three weeks to get back into writing. But then the next time they make it two weeks and then it becomes one week and then it becomes four days and it becomes two days and it becomes one day. So they have they get knocked off just for one day to get back on it. Before they get knocked off, take three weeks, get back.

Speaker 1:

I think that's in that is the magic. If you can reduce the time it can't get you to get back on get back on the horse and keep going, That's the magic because we're always gonna fuck up as humans. We're always gonna do it. So how quickly can we rebound? And if you have a bar if you go out and start training, you feel shit on Sunday, can you rebound on Monday?

Speaker 1:

Maybe you can't, but can you rebound? Make it a Tuesday instead of the Thursday, instead of the Friday. That's the beauty. So don't worry if you do go off track. It's about the rebound back.

Speaker 1:

Let's shorten the rebound over time. But enjoy your weekend, guys. Lots of love. I hope you have a great time, and I hope Scott, the future Scott's enjoying in Ibiza right now. Maybe not too much, but I hope he's having a good time.

Speaker 1:

But see you next week, guys. Ta ra. And that is it for today's episode. So hopefully you took something away from it. If you didn't, here's what we need to take away.

Speaker 1:

Stop wasting time on social media. Stop wasting time gossiping. You've only got a day to live. Today's the only day you ever have. So if there's anything to take away from this podcast, even if you can't understand the word I say, even if you didn't resonate with the wisdom I try to deliver, this is a reminder of you daily to live one day at a time.

Speaker 1:

Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days but if you can make the most of today I'm telling you you'll have a fulfilled life so enjoy your day and hopefully I'll see you back tomorrow. Do daily to live one day at a time. Give your moments meaning today and don't be fooled by thinking you've got unlimited amount of days. But if you can make the most of today, I'm telling you, you'll have a fulfilled life. So enjoy your day and hopefully I'll see you back tomorrow.
