Ways to Think About Life

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. So hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.

Speaker 1:

And remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Good morning, I just finished the best book club we've had, I reckon. And it was to finish off Man's Search for Meaning. And look, we just went around everybody, asked them what they thought of the book. And everybody had such like, and I'm not sure the word phenomenal is the right word because there's a lot of suffering in the stories, but the way, especially the people in the group and this, I don't wanna start naming because I might forget something about every person that shared.

Speaker 1:

Wanna say thank you, but also just like, just opens up your vision to how, yes, like we can talk about Mansod for Meaning, we can talk about the Auschwitz and concentration camps, but hearing stories from people you're speaking to directly, you know, us normal people And what we've been through and how we're here, we're still here. We're not out for the count. We've got through everything so far. We're still going, we're still optimistic, we're trying to improve ourselves clearly because we're on fitness and health membership. And I just think it's so inspiring, like listening to stories.

Speaker 1:

I think we need to be like, need to pull the pressure off a bit from ourselves, like especially the stories, like all of you are doing amazing jobs getting through this life because yes, it was harder before. There's no doubt life was harder before. But if actually like zoom out and look at other people's like actually listen and that's the best thing about book clubs is like everybody's listening intently to other people's stories and inputs and insights. And if you think about it, how many conversations in real life do you have that the other people are just completely listening, zoned in and listening to what you're saying? It is a very rare thing to happen.

Speaker 1:

So us all listening and being really engaging and then like taking takeaways from these conversations we're having is next level because that's not what typically happens conversations in real life between friends and stuff. It's always about someone talking, someone talking, nobody like lets the guard down and nobody really connects and kind of can learn from it. Do you I mean? So I think that's one of the most vital things from a book club. And if none of you are in the book club or if you're listening to this and you're not even a member, I think it's definitely worthwhile joining a community where you can open up with people and talk about these topics that are deep.

Speaker 1:

These topics that we should be talking about, the ancient Greeks, the Romans, the philosophical schools back in the day, they're walking around their togas going, boys, let's have a chat. And I'm sorry, like, the the women probably did as well, like, in their own way, but they had way less rights back in. But, you know, they were just talking. Look. What's the what's the purpose of this?

Speaker 1:

And they were just all day, every day, discussing in-depth talk, and they probably, you know, over time, there was obviously politics and stuff that come into play. But they probably did spend a huge amount of time talking to subjects. And when it comes to us in today's world, how many, and I know my friends always do this, other people, you have a chat and you say you'll say something that's slightly deeper than surface level and they go, oh, it's too deep to talk about that. Oh, they like will shame you for even attempting to go a step deeper into into a topic. And it's like, why the hell is that a bad thing?

Speaker 1:

Like, if it's like good vibes and stuff and you top it in, yes, you can still have like a good vice pathing. You can still go weave in and out of different types of conversations. You can go from, well actually I read this book and it was like you know it is quite dark but learned this, oh really and then you can have a chat and you go back into someone else. It doesn't have to always be top top top happy happy happy positive optimism that's it. Like I think the lessons in life are in the opposite way.

Speaker 1:

And then by understanding the opposite way, know the stuff that really suffering all that stuff, we can then start being very much optimistic and having an optimism mindset for our own lives because we do live in a very, we live in an amazing time. Like there's no doubt this is the best time to be alive as a human being. Let me rephrase as a human being living in the Western or first world countries like no doubt because we've got all this technology, food in abundance, communications in all sorts of communications, which is very fortunate. And we have to remind ourselves of that as well, dummy. You have to remind yourself you're fortunate today to even work on yourself.

Speaker 1:

You're fortunate enough today to even be able to walk. Right one of the stories in Buckler last night, partner, I don't know say too much about it, guess it doesn't be shared publicly but partner had had to have a amputated leg because of an accident right. Still went through still now working in the job, job that he likes. She's an amazing person helped him through his working on herself got a job that she loves now as well. It's just like we're so lucky to be able to freaking walk.

Speaker 1:

Look at Stephen Hawking right, I know like you know a famous example, peak of his career early 20s then you know starts falling over, can't walk, can't talk, can't do anything independently. You can literally do and more than sure this is police to nearly all of you. Well, all of your membership. You literally can do anything you want with your body. Most of you.

Speaker 1:

And I don't know everybody's physical thing, but most of can walk, you can run, you can talk, you punch me if you want easily when you see me, bam. You swing with a hand. You can jump, you can train, you can sit down, you can stand up. I know people like, oh Scott like stop talking my stuff like you know I can do it right, doesn't mean I should always think about people who can't. No no we should though.

Speaker 1:

I disagree. Completely disagree. And we can't always anchor ourselves in we're gonna die and we're very lucky to be alive and suffering was terrible back end. It was nasty. Course, we can't because we we go with the flow of life and we should go with the flow of life and it should be something we're gonna try and enjoy, right?

Speaker 1:

But what happens is when we do go deeper into these conversations and topics at times like book club, spend an hour or two talking about it and reading about it, is when we are going through the flow of our life, these things in our mind and I've been reading them about memory, they don't disappear because you are absorbed into learning about them. That is like a blueprint in your mind. You've created that kind of neurological connection or whatever happens when it comes to memory. And when we do go for the flow, we might not be consciously remembering these lessons, but it's subconsciously there and it actually guides us in a better way. I 100% believe it.

Speaker 1:

Like most of our decisions are unconscious and when we fill in our unconscious with all of these thoughts and debates and conversation and good insight, they direct us in a better way. There is no doubt in my mind. And I think who was mentioning it, Melanie, think mentioned in on a book club, you start reading these books and these really good books and they're kind of similar self help and personal development. And the more you read, the more they start clicking together because you start connecting things. And then you wake up one day and just something else connects.

Speaker 1:

You don't know how it's happened, you wake up and something's connected. It's like what's going on, subconscious, super powerful. And this happens, imagine this over the next three, four, five years. Think about It is you can't even you can't even foresee the change in your mind because it's gonna be so big. So, yeah, that's me done for today.

Speaker 1:

I think I'm gonna post the book club from last night on the podcast player so you'll be able to listen to it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts Forever. So after this voice note, if you got time for a walk, just start listening to it. It's actually phenomenal. Listen to the stories, listen to the insights, and, you'll take a lot from it. So that's your task really to get it to to take the insights from listen and enjoy your day.

Speaker 1:

Twenty four hours is the only time you'll ever have. Your only time I think someone messaged someone emailed in I think yesterday saying, do you have any advice on time and fitness of him? My advice is this, you'll never have more time. You've got the same amount of time as every other human being has ever lived twenty four hours in a day. Yes, some people live longer, but it's what you do with these twenty four hours of matters, that's it.

Speaker 1:

That is it. You can't give a meaning to your entire life but you can give meaning to tasks each day like why am I now gonna go on a walk? Well I can and enjoy the nature of London, whatever it is, isn't the nature of London but just enjoy the walk. That's the purpose is to enjoy it and see this beauty of the world even if it's city beauty, I see it anyway. What's the purpose of it?

Speaker 1:

You can put you can give meaning and purpose to the tasks you do each day, even if the ones you hate doing or the ones are shit and you wouldn't like doing. There is always something you can do to give meaning and purpose to it. And that's all you do every day, rinse, repeat. And your life is full of meaning. Your life is full of stories.

Speaker 1:

Your life is full of purpose. Your life is full of, kind of like fulfillment in a way. I'm gonna leave you in that guys. It is Friday, it's a bank holiday. Enjoy yourself this weekend.

Speaker 1:

Don't be too harsh on yourself. If you are gonna have a few drinks, happy days, you know, just make better decisions. Like I mentioned earlier about filling your mind with these books and these insights and they subconsciously direct you in the future. It's the same with the macros, the more you start tracking, right, the more you start getting familiar with foods and what's good. And don't think good and bad, what's worth the macros and what's not.

Speaker 1:

When you do start going out to bars and restaurants and drinking you start then making these decisions like I know that's not really worth it, can get for example a pint is like you know two thirty calories while you can get three also with Proseccos for one pint in calorie wise. So if I'm a female or just you know, I drink pint and I'm a female. Right? And I'm like, do you know what? I can have three Proseccos and that'll last me longer because I can take my time with it, time to grow up.

Speaker 1:

Start making these micro decisions and then things, they just it just gets easier for you. As long as you don't go crazy enough three days of overeating, overeating, overeating, you're fine. Just deploy moderation. Ask yourself this weekend, Am I being moderate right now? And do that for drinking.

Speaker 1:

Do it for everything. If I'm having for my third drink, Scott, do you another drink? Am I being moderate? No, Scott. Maybe four is not not being moderate.

Speaker 1:

It's gonna lead lead to five lead to six. I'm right, mate. I'll just, I'll just drink this one slower and finish off. Don't care if he says, oh, look. Don't care.

Speaker 1:

Moderate. If you've already had a takeaway, right, on a Saturday, you've already you go home and there's food in the fridge and you know you can cook some food but you're lazy at the time and you're going to live through and you're like is this really being moderate? No it's not. Okay, that answers your question just go make something from the fridge just ready there to eat because it's otherwise gonna go to waste. Oh, so many examples but I'm going on now for eleven minutes and twenty four seconds so I do apologize for the longer voice note.

Speaker 1:

Enjoy guys today first of all because it's the only day ever have. Bye bye. And that's it. Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host Golf Leer. Hopefully you understood something I said.
