What's Under Our Control?

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the one day at a time podcast where we forget about yesterday. We don't worry about tomorrow. It's what are we going to do today? This all matters because you've only ever had or will ever have the fantastic twenty four hours a day you're about to embark on. Hopefully this episode is going to give you some daily dose of wisdom that you can take action on today to improve your life.

Speaker 1:

Remember, all it takes is one day at a time. Good morning. So some things are under our control and other things are not under our control. So what are things that are under our control? The only thing under our control is our attitude towards things, our mindset.

Speaker 1:

Right? Like nothing else is on there's a lot of things that are probably not under your control. Right? There's things that happen to you, good and bad, a lot of stuff that's not in your control, the weather, some are being nasty to you, your scale weight day to day not really under your control, it's always up and down. Most things are not under your control, you have to focus on what is it what is in your control.

Speaker 1:

The only thing that is 100% in your control is your attitude towards things, your attitude towards the tasks in your life, your day to day tasks. You can always apply the right attitude if you wanted to, right? And the thing you got to remember is you can do your best. Like I had really amazing three days macros, trained really well, everything was perfect, got on the scales in the morning, weight went up. It's like, I know I'm on plan.

Speaker 1:

I know I'm sticking to my macros and I'm doing my own steps and I'm training. I know fat is coming off. Even if the scales are telling me, the weight's not coming down. Because fat loss and weight loss are different. Weight water retention can mask fat loss for a while.

Speaker 1:

So you know, I don't mind. I know and my control my attitude is more important, I'm gonna keep going. But the Stoics, the ancient Stoics, so definitely you should read up because a lot a lot of wisdom to teach. They had the story of the stoic archer. So the stoic archer he could pull, put, use the best bow, best arrow, he could pull that arrow back perfectly with precision, like he could have done the best ever, pulled it back and he could have let it go at the perfect moment.

Speaker 1:

Everything was perfect. But guess what? When that arrow's in flight, it's not under his control anymore, and the wind could go and blow it away. Something could block it. Loads of things can go wrong.

Speaker 1:

But that doesn't mean the archer did something wrong. Just means that sometimes we we just gotta do our best and things just don't go our way all the time. But what's important is that we always do our best, that we always do the setup, we always look at it like that. And we look at things like, look, you've got to trust that the dots connect. Right?

Speaker 1:

And if you are putting the work in day to day and you've got and you're bringing right attitude to the day, the attitude of making the most of your day, doing your best every day, being grateful, you're in the 1% in the world, %. You are in the 1% in the world. You look at other countries and stuff. We're in first world country UK like you know some of you across the world we're the 1%. We need to remind ourselves of that.

Speaker 1:

We're very fortunate to wake up every day and try and improve our health and fitness as opposed to just being able to survive for the day. Literally, that's what we're doing. We're waking up and we're like, we can actually improve ourselves. We can actually go to the gym, and actually like lift weights to get stronger. We can actually eat loads of foods we want to eat.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. Actually, can eat any food I want to fit into my macros, even more amazing. Actually, I got a community online of people who are gonna support me. Like, that's unbelievable. And I can speak to experts like Doctor P and Ryan about mental health and improve that.

Speaker 1:

That's unbelievable. And I can do all this every day and improve myself and focus on other things. Unreal. So, you know, remind remind yourself of that, and just bring the right attitude to this thing. I think, look, things are not gonna go your way.

Speaker 1:

Tough shit. You might have a day of, oh Scott I've been perfect all week but my weight's gone up. Yeah, tough shit like that happens but if you're on plan it's gonna happen, your fat loss is coming off %. Alright, things won't go your way all the time doesn't mean you're gonna give up. You can't give up just because things are not going always to your plan, that's not how the world works.

Speaker 1:

The only thing we can do is we can build the right habits, deploy the right attitude and we see what happens. And you know, how long does good things take to create. So it can be two days is it? It can be three days. It would definitely feel better in three or four days.

Speaker 1:

We can definitely feel, do you know what, I'm in a deficit, I'm feeling a bit tighter, 100% that can happen. I can definitely feel my being in the gym for three, four days with a plan definitely helps. I feel different within a week always when I get back on a plan. But really don't put so much of your hope on huge change so soon because hope is destructive in that sense. There's a story about in Man's Search for Meaning, which is about Viktor Frankl who was who was a Jew in World War two and he got taken to the death camps by the Nazis and he was in Auschwitz for a bit.

Speaker 1:

And he said that this guy, this old man was telling him, look, doctor, doctor, I a dream. And, you know, Victor Frank was like, what was the dream? He said in this dream, we were free. In thirty days time we were free. And we left his camp when the war was over.

Speaker 1:

And Franco was like right and he's like okay you know there's a vision I had a vision it's gonna come true it's gonna come true. Franco was all fine. Right thirty days later on the day that he had a vision that he's free he thought he was gonna be free didn't he? He had hope. Guess what happened the day after that he had that vision?

Speaker 1:

Well they weren't freed, but he died. He had put so much hope, so much of his being into that day, that hope, that vision is going to come true, that the day it did next he just let go and died, like that's an extreme example. But hope can really mess you up, it can build you up to a moment that you're anticipating, like same with lockdown and stuff now, June, like are all of are you putting loads of hope behind being fully free then? You shouldn't be because there's another variant. Things are always going wrong as government is inept.

Speaker 1:

You shouldn't be putting all this hope on that day to be the day of freedom. It's because if you do that, the chances that they come in is gonna destroy you, it's gonna hit you hard when it doesn't happen, you're gonna feel down. So don't put hope on things that are outside of your control. Put your effort into the attitude that you can do with your days and just the dots will line up promise promise promise promise promise they will line up and things will get moving. But yeah, hopefully you're gonna have a good day today.

Speaker 1:

So put a smile on your face if you're on the walk, get some vigor into that walk, get some eighties on after this maybe, go for a go for a dance. But well done. If you're listening and you're listening every day and you're trying to improve your mindset and stuff, I hope you are thoroughly enjoying the journey because you should be. It's a nice journey to be on, a journey of self improvement. It is very, very, very fortunate to be in this position.

Speaker 1:

So enjoy it. And, yeah, speak to you tomorrow. Remember, one day at a time. And that's it. Thank you for listening to the one day at a time podcast with your host, Golf Leer.
